The first six pictures on this page have been submitted by Steve Robson, Steve has also supplied most of the information for the captions.
Al O'Connor rolled Al's Gasser in September 1978, this was what was left.
Fellow racers carried a blanket down both sides of the strip and we all threw money into it.  The new Gasser was soon built.
Tog from Eurodragster tells me that the collection was so generous that it came to almost the exact amount of the rebuild, there was only something like five or ten pounds in it.

This is Les Field's small block Chevy powered BSA bike shot in 1967 at a bike-only meet (back in the days when bikes and cars ran at separate meetings).
This bike was the English answer to E J Potter, the legendary Michigan Mad Man.  Steve doesn't remember any details except that when Les fired it up, it was the most amazing sounding bike in the world!

The sad remains of Micky Naylor's once beautiful Medicine Man Top Fuel Dragster after he pulled such a violent wheelie off the line that the car went right over and, as you can see, was totalled.
This car was originally imported from the USA and campaigned by Dennis Priddle as Mr Revell in Top Fuel where ran it down to 6.04 seconds, a record for a slingshot dragster which stood for many years.  Dennis began to concentrate on funny cars so the car was sold to Mike Hall who re-named it Shutdown and raced it in Pro Comp.

A couple of pictures of the famous Stripteaser Minivan, this one was taken in October 1972 when it looked rather utilitarian.

Moving quickly along to the International meeting in June 1973 and, not only has the sun come out, but Stripteaser has had a smart new paint job and shiny back wheels into the bargain.  It still has the metal Minivan body though, check out those exhaust headers from the straight 6 Jaguar engine exiting through the roof.

Steve's twins have been recruited as Micke Kagered's team mascots, so he knows something of what goes on in the pits.
This photo is Steve's pride and joy as he seemed to be the only one to get the shot of Micke's engine blow-up at the 2003 Euro Finals.  Knowing the pit talk, he had a premonition that something would happen, so he had his camera at the ready.
Asa (Micke's Missus) reckoned it was "Going out in style".

The next three pictures were sent in by David Crunkhorn aka 'Crunch' who is the Crew Chief on Martyn Jones' super pro dragster.  David tells me he previously crewed on Richard Dawson's Enforcer, George Davie's Pubcrawler, Dave Burdett's Boston Straggler and Steve Johnson's Motor Mouse rail.  Quite a Who's Who of 1970/80s dragsters.
This is Richard Dawson waiting to run in his Jag-powered Enforcer in 1984.

Richard Dawson again in the Enforcer at Santa Pod in 1984.

With all the work that goes into prepping the track, understandably you don't get this sort of thing anymore.  But back in those less sophisticated days, flame burn outs were all the rage and just the thing to warm up the fans at the November (and December!) meetings.
Owen Hayward is no doubt thankful for his firesuit as he threatens to incinerate the Houndog 9 fuel funny car.

I think this is a first for a UK site - drag boats!
Clive Rooms sent in these shots taken from his 1972 trip to the USA.
I know absolutely nothing about these things except that they were very dangerous.

Wild Bunch racer Alec Coe submitted the next five pictures.
The first two are of The Breaker which Alec purchased from Brian Cooke and raced at Santa Pod for one season, probably in 1974.  Power was provided by a 3100cc V6 Ford running on methanol which resulted in a best run of around 12 seconds and 120 mph.

On the left and below right are two pictures of another of Alec's cars which he called Shy Torque and competed in the Wild Bunch.  The car was built by Baron Sharpe in 1984 and called The Rutland Rebel.  Present motivation is provided by a 355" small block Chevy mated to a Race Glide box.  This combination has produced a best of 10.29 seconds at 116 mph.  Alec intends to alter the gearing on the car.

On the left is Alec's son Tommy ' The Gun' Coe's car, also a Wild Bunch runner, called Psycho.  It has a 3500cc Rover V8 engine which has taken it to a best of 11.155 seconds and 119.36 mph.
Visit the
Wild Bunch site for the full lowdown on both the Mad 'R's Drag Racing cars and their achievements.

The last three pictures were donated by Peter Allen.
This one should be entitled The Hit - the front of the car is slightly blurred caused by the violent upward motion of the car as Micke Kagered hurls his Top Fuel Dragster off the line.

My thanks to Martin Gleadow of Time Machine Racing for identifying this car as Peter Lane's Earsplittenloudenboomer 468ci Chevrolet Camaro powered Super Gasser.
To see a picture of a much earlier and rather different Earsplittenloudenboomer click here

And finally for this page, the Fireforce jet-powered funny car hard at work heating up (and sandblasting) anyone who has been ill-advised enough to remain in the barn behind it.
