THE CREATION OF ALLY BLUE
|
There’s a hot rod in the British Isles we all know.
She raced way back a long time ago.
Well this girl’s name is Ally Blue.S
he don’t eat nothin’ but a nitro stew.
She’s got a chauffeur that’s a real hot shoe.
She can snap your head before you count to two.S
he gotta a big ugly blower and a pair of Hemi heads.
Raced at Silverstone and Brands Hatch they said.
She’s the fastest sled there is around;
steel wheels with the Firestone hides.
She’s the Queen in the race fans’ eyes.
Now look at that hot rod go.
She rides thru the staging lanes pretty as can be.T
hen hole shot big ol’ dragsters leavin’ ‘em dead on the tree.
Those cats don’t race her ‘cause they know she’s great;‘
cause she’s the Hemi motored slingshot number 58.
She’s the quickest rod there is around;
wearing tin of aluminum hide.
She’s the Queen of the starting line.
Look at that dragster go.

Ally Blue is recorded by Canadian rock guitarist Ked Dieter. As well as Ked’s screaming guitar the track features the voices of Gerry Belton, Sydney Allard and Tommy Ivo recorded in 1964, plus the sound of the Allard Chrysler dragster at Blackbushe during the same year.
The birth of Ally Blue makes interesting reading. Sam Eidy was someone who had become involved with the project as part of the Booth-Arons team re-creating the 354 Chrysler Hemi engine for the car. He had become a complete ‘Ally’ addict and found himself doodling out some lyrics about the car to the tune of ‘Alley Oop’.
|
Although originally written for a comic strip of the same name by Dallas Frazier who recorded it in 1957, the ‘Alley Oop’ version by the Hollywood Argyles in 1960 is probably the most well-known because it made Number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100. But it has also been recorded by other artists such as the Beach Boys and George Thorougood and is familiar to most rock music fans of a ‘certain age’.
Sam e-mailed his new lyrics to others involved with the restoration to get comments, and ACAG American Patron Traci Hrudka sent them on to her guitar playing friend Ked (the Polar Bear) Dieter in Canada; his song Thunder in the Distance by KED and Big Blue Hammer was being used on the Project 1320 ning website. Ked was also Vice President of Mixposure’s MixStreamRadio. Being a drag racing and stock car fan he was immediately hooked by the restoration project and Sam’s lyrics.
He made contact with Sam and they set about re-working the lyrics, melody and arrangement so there would be no copyright infringements, and laid down a new version of the song that featured Ked’s rocking guitar and vocals plus a Beach Boy styled harmony by Mack Sanders. Ked produced the work and played all the other instruments – hence the Ally Blue CD.
